What is Video Converter?

Created by Surf Island Solutions, Video Converter is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) that claims to enable conversion of video formats and to solve all video-related problems. On initial inspection, this functionality may seem legitimate and useful, however, be aware that Video Converter is considered to be adware, since it employs a deceptive software marketing method called ‘bundling’ (stealth installation of additional programs together with the chosen software) to install on Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox) without users’ consent. After successful infiltration, Video Converter generates intrusive online ads and tracks users’ Internet browsing activity.

Video Converter adware

Advertisements generated by this PUP include (but are not limited to) pop-up/under, banner, interstitial, and text ads. There is a high probability that clicking these advertisements will cause high-risk adware or malware infections. Furthermore, Video Converter continually monitors users’ Internet browsing activity by collecting various software and hardware information such as Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, operating system and browser types (and browsing data including cookies, browsing history, URLs visited, search queries entered into search engines, pages viewed, etc.), device identifiers, geographic locations, and other similar details that may be personally identifiable. This behavior can result in serious privacy issues or even identity theft, and therefore, you are strongly advised to eliminate Video Converter from your Internet browsers.

Video Converter is similar to other potentially unwanted programs that use bundling as an installation method. Some examples are EnterDigital, Spark Cast, and AppSuper among many others. None of these applications are useful to the user – their purpose is to generate revenue by sharing collected data with third parties and delivering intrusive online ads. Research shows that most adware is distributed via small programs called ‘download clients’ on freeware download websites such as download.com, soft32.com, and softonic.com among many others. Download clients are used by these websites as free services and traffic monetization tools, since they offer installation of promoted (according to the developers, ‘100% legitimate and virus-free’) browser extensions together with the chosen software. Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware often leads to high-risk adware or malware infections. Inadvertent installation of Video Converter, or other similar adware, can be prevented by closely inspecting each step of the free software download procedure and clicking ‘Decline’ if installation of any additional programs is offered. Furthermore, all software downloaded from the Internet should be installed using the ‘Advanced’ or ‘Custom’ installation options, rather than ‘Typical’, ‘Regular’, or ‘Quick’ – this will reveal any hidden applications listed for installation and allow you to decline them. If your computer is infected with Video Converter, and you observe intrusive online ads when browsing the Internet, follow the instructions below to uninstall this adware from your Internet browsers.
